Target Audience Update

After asking 26 differently ranged people in different audience types (gender, age, profession, etc), I narrowed my target audience down specifically demographically and psychographically. I have decided to present my findings from my questionnaire as a pie chart as I think it is the easiest visual way in which to see which target audience my film is aimed at.

I decided that when asking for an audience to complete my survey that I would ask an evenly split gender audience due to this being the fairest way in which to learn about an audience that is not specifically targeted at one sex. The reason for this is because I do not want my film to specifically target one gender audience as this will restrict the viewers of my film as opposed to targeting a large range.
I asked an audience from a range of ages, because I wanted to find information from a range of audience’s, different genders and different ages. I could not evenly split the four age ranges into 26 and therefore, I asked 14 16-21 and 12 22-26+. I asked more of a younger audience (even if only by two more people) because I felt that information from a younger mainstream film audience would benefit my target audience research further.

With regards to cinema and DVD spending, the older audience spent more money on going to cinema and buying DVD’s due to having a lot more disposable income to spend on luxuries. However, the reason I found this was apparent is because the older audience seem to go to cinema on full prices and more expensive nights (Friday and Saturday prime time nights) less often than a younger audience went to cinema more often on cheaper student nights (Orange Wednesdays and Student Film Fridays) as well as buying DVDs at full price when they first come out as opposed to a younger audience waiting until they have dropped in price, or download them cheaper off the internet, or download them for free illegally.

From this question, I can say that a younger audience is more likely to watch films through internet streaming and downloading as opposed to an older audience. However, this does not mean that an older audience does not download and/or watch films through internet streaming as a number of people from an ‘older audience’ I asked this questionnaire to answered this. I find this due to digitalisation and an older audience being under pressure (it could be said) to be able to use modern technology like the internet, iPhones, downloading, etc.

The gender difference can be seen distinctively on this question, as well as the age difference. When focusing on gender, there seems to be a distinctive difference between females liking horror films including vampires and males liking horror films including zombies. The reason I think this is, is because of the recent ‘craze’ of vampires being seen in the media (the Twilight film series, True Blood TV series, etc) as well as the recent ‘craze’ of zombies being seen in the media (Nazi Zombies video game). With regards to age, a younger audience seem to enjoy films including the above characters; however an older audience seem to enjoy a more conventional style of horror film including a mad man or a ghost film – this could possibly be because of an older audience enjoy a more traditional ‘old fashioned’

Film Voice Over Update

I read the speech out loud to see how long the speech would last - 35.27 seconds. I wanted the speech to be spoken throughout the full of my trailer however, the time scale of the speech is to short. Therefore, I have decided that the voice over will not be a continuous voice over, it will be broken down into sections which will be added over specific parts of the film trailer where they will be best fitted. Some shots, I plan on including match on action, on some shots I plan on showing a visual image that relates to the theme of the voice over (e.g the scientific theme) however, not a direct match on action shot.

Production Company animated Logo

A production company logo is a very important feature included in a film trailer as it is very likely the first and only image and audience will get of the production company. For this reason, it is important that a strong image representation is portrayed to an audience. Below are two examples of well known film company logos which are featured at the beginning of every film made by their production company, one is text based and the other text and image based. Both represent a different visual image - the UK Film Council logo represents a serious film company due to the bold lettering and use of the world 'council' being associated with politics and the government and the Walt Disney logo represents children's films and innocence due to the use of a fantasy castle and swirly fun writing.

Some film production company’s logos are specifically designed to connote a specific genre of film which they specialise in. An example of this is the film production company Twisted Pictures which produced the Saw films series as seen below. This is an animated logo played at the beginning of Twisted Pictures films. This production company specifies in creating films in the horror genre and therefore, their logo portrays this to an audience immediately with the use of barbed wire which goes around the letters of the logo as well as the name of the production company itself.

For my own film, I am choosing to create an animated logo as I feel that it would be the most conventional to be included in a film as well as it standing out to an audience when played as opposed to a still image logo. However, I will design a logo which can be drawn as a still image logo to be included on a DVD case, poster, etc but that can also be animated into a moving logo to be included in the opening sequence of the film trailer. Below is a very rough first draft of what I plan my still logo and animated logo to look like. The image is what I plan the logo to look like as a still image. When it is animated and played at the begining of the film trailer, I plan on making it so that it is animated to show the knife stabbing into the letters and blood then slowly pouring out and spilling onto the below letters.

Film Trailer Voice over

I have decided that the main sound included in my film trailer will be a non diegetic voice over which will be added over the film trailer when it is finished so that the speech fits in with certain sequences of the film trailer (match on action) and the timings of the film trailer as a whole. However, I will still included diegetic sound from certain seqeunces of the film which are included in the film trailer such as dialouge and non diegetic music as a sound track. I have written a mock up of the voice over speech I plan to use however, it is a rough draft and therefore, will be edited and altered as my film trailer progresses. Additionally, I will be writing up the speech for the character to read as an English Language transcript for the reason that this will include when the character is to pause, say specific words with emphatic stress, etc. I feel that this will make it easier for the character to read as well as making it easier for them to read the script in a way that they can act with their voice.
[Voice-over film trailer]
Female Scientist: I got my first bunch of subjects today, 5 girls and 5 boys ranging in age from 12-16…they always said the children of this generation would lead to great success, I hope more than ever this is true. Being part of the Green Cross Co-operation has succeeded to bring so many medical break throughs, even if the experimentation has seemed…inhumane. If the public ever knew what we were doing they would, they would run riot! I wonder sometimes if they would be able to look past the negative exterior of the experimentation and see the effect they have had on the greater good. But what they don’t know can’t hurt them.

I got the idea for this voice over speech specifically from the film 'V for Vendetta', directed by James McTeigue and released in 2005, from the scene where the scientest Delia Surridge is having her diary read by a police officer and she is voicing over the text written in the diary over the visual film image.

Insperation for Film Trailer

Resident Evil, directed by Paul W.S Anderson, released 2002

The Resident Evil film trailers feature the scientifical theme as well as the government conspiracy which are included in the film. The trailers both include careful editing including technical editing software to give the trailers then professional scientifical theme to them. After watching both of these trailers, the themes and issues portrayed in the trailer is something I want to also include in my film trailer as I think they are very important aspects/themes of the film and should be included in the trailer so that the audience are aware of this.

Dead Island, Game

The emotional reaction of an audience is what drew me to inspire part of my film trailer on this trailer, even though it is for a video game. The game trailer is based on the horror zombie genre, however goes in depth with use of sound and editing to target the audience's emotions and tells a story. I would like to include this emotional aspect in my film trailer as I think it would make the film stand out contrasting with other zombie horror film trailers which usually focusing on the action/thriller aspect of the film (gun fights, zombie fights, etc).

Parent Consent Form and Release Form

One section of my film trailer will include children zombies between the age of 12 and 16. I have decided, because of the age of these characters, to write a parent consent form for the children's parents to sign to give permission for their child to be; involved in my project, for their photos to be put onto my blog (as well as the final video and the videos showing the development), for makeup to be put onto their child as well as letting the parent know how much commitment the project will take from their child.

Dear Parent/Guardian
As part of my Media Studies coursework, I am making a film trailer which I could like your son/daughter to be involved in. This would include your son/daughter:
·         Being recorded by camera and having their photograph taken and the videos/photos being put onto the internet, as well as being sent off to an exam board
·         Being involved in having make-up/face paint put onto them
·         Giving up some of their own personal time
This will be done over a period of 5 months and therefore, your son/daughter may be needed for a number of days one after another or needed for a variety of short periods of times over these 5 months. Being involved in this project needs commitment and therefore, your son/daughter must be willing to put in the time and dedication to this project.
I hope that you will be accepting in giving your son/daughter permission to be involved in this project as it will be a lot of fun for your child as well as educating if your child wants to learn about Media/Film Studies. Please tear off the bottom permission slip and hand back to me as soon as possible.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, respectfully yours,

Hannah Baxter, Wyke 6th Form College Student

Additonally, I have decided to create a release form to be signed by students from my college taking part. This will act like a contract which means that when a student decides to be involved, they will not be able to back out or decide they do not want to take part in the project as this is a problem I have faced in previous coursework breifs.

Dear Student,
You have been asked personally to be included in my Media A2 Coursework project, a film trailer. If you decide to accept being included in this project, you will be expected to put in the dedication as if it was your own work. This includes; learning your character’s scripted lines and turning up to all scheduled recording sessions. Failure to do so will result in your tutor teacher being informed and disciplinary actions being taken.
It must also be understood by the participants involved that all photos, recordings etc. will be put on the internet as well as being shown to various students, teachers and the exam board. Therefore, signing this permission slip means you are agreeing to having your photos taken and being recording as well as these pieces of evidence being put onto the internet.
Please do take time and read this carefully before agreeing to be involved in this project, I hope that you will agree as you will be a great addition to my cast/crew.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, respectfully yours,

DVD Case Research

I have a few initial ideas for my DVD case after completing my film synopsis. I have decided to research more the one idea for my DVD case due to my coursework being at an early stage and the synopsis and plot of the film having the possibility of changing through time, especially through the time of writing my story board for the trailer.

Idea #1: My first initial idea is to create a DVD case which includes a young female child zombie including the tag line 'our future generation'. The reason I think this would be so effective is because young female children are often connoted to the horror genre as they are seen as scary and creepy if used in the correct way (the model having the correct make-up, facial expression, etc.). Additionally, the tag line would relate to the visual image as well as relating to a phrase used by a general audience and therefore, they could recognise this. Some famous young female children actress I will use for inspiration for this style are: Isabelle Fuhrman (The Orphan directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, released 2009), Jodelle Ferland (Silent Hill, directed by Christopher Gans, released in 2006), Linda Blair (The Exorcist, directed by William Friedking, released in 1973).

Idea #2: My second idea is to focus on an extreme close up of a character's face with blood shot red eyes; this commutating evil and the mutation from human to zombie which relates to my film. The reason I think this would be so effective is because close up visual images of a characters face for a film poster (especially young women's faces) is a well-known and well used film poster image, especially films in the horror and thriller genre and therefore, is stereotypically associated with the genre of my film. Additionally, the massive use of this idea would mean that my target audience could relate to this film poster and know instantly what the genre of the film is because of their previous experience with this image.

Idea #3: My third idea is to focus on the actual zombie horror element of the film and include this on the front cover, doing so by including a scary creepy looking mutated zombie hand. The reason I think this would be so effective is because it gives the audience a slight insight into what to expect from the film, if the hand is editing to look scary enough like these DVD cases above, as it gives the audience the knowledge of how in depth the mutation in this film actually is. As well as the body language just a hand can send across to the audience, the grabbing motion relating to other zombie films and what codes and conventions the audience can expect to see from a zombie film which they would want to see.

Idea #4: My fourth idea is to focus the audience's attention on the military theme included in the film as well as the zombie horror element and use characters dressed in military army wear, holding military weapons like guns and grenades as well as a group of characters dressed as zombies in ratting torn clothes and pale bloody covered faces. I think this would be so effective because this bring the thriller and action sub genres into the horror genre and therefore, would attract a larger audience. Additionally, the use of a female character on the DVD case ranges again the audience of this film as this goes against gender stereotypes and therefore, attracts a larger female audience.

Synopsis of my Film

I have decided to write a synopsis for my film trailer for two reasons. One, because it will help me in creating my story board if I know the plot of my film is and will help me think of exact parts within the film I can refer to in my trailer. Two, I can edit this formal version of the synopsis, cut it down and feature it on the back of my DVD case for my film.

The Synopsis - Medical breakthroughs are what keep people healthy and happy... keeps people's hopes up in those dark times... keeps people alive? It's 2010 and in the public's eye, Green Cross Cooperation is the largest known pharmaceutical entity in the world. The company is happily known for its amazing scientifical breakthroughs in medical science and health care but unknown to even it's employees, it's massive profit margins come from human experimentation, terrorist and military weaponry. That is until a break out of a genetic mutation drug used as a military weapon is leaked out of a secret lab base. What follows is the breakdown of society, rapid human mutation, people turning against each other and all the while, the members of Green Cross Cooperation are hidden in a safe haven. It is up to a small group of survivors including an ex-military solider to try and save humanity and bring those guilty to justice.

The Story Type - My film is not categorised into just one story type as I feel that a film can never be defined as just one story type, especially a zombie film as there are a lot of codes and conventions included which must be considered (e.g. the horror and fear element, the heroism/cowardliness of a specific character(s), romance between two character even if it is only brief or a possibility throughout the film, etc.).

The Quest - This story type relates to the protagonist of my film accepting the challenge of saving humanity and bringing those guilty to justice.
The Wanderer - This story type relates to the female lead character of my film, leaving one place and arriving at a new place however there being a problem there, this obviously being the zombie Apocalypse.
Punitive Plot - This story type relates to the antagonist of the film, who starts off with a false cover of a protagonist to get in with the group of survivors.

The Characters -
  • Ex-Military Solider (Philip, protagonist) - Being the dominant male military figure, Philip takes lead of the group, not in favour of everyone (Maria), however this later in the film turns into deep feelings between the two characters. He is tall with dark stubble and throughout the film trailer, wears military trousers and a black t-shirt, this being because the military pattern connotes his dominant authority as well as creating realism because there are no costume changes as this would be the last of the character's worries in a zombie Apocalypse.
  • Green Cross Cooperation Worker (Andrew, antagonist) - Andrew is a Green Cross Cooperation Worker however, this is unknown to his fellow survivors until nearer the end of the film and therefore, he is seen as a protagonist just because he is a survivor helping the rest of the group take down the Green Cross Cooperation. However, he is actually trying to reach the safe haven where he will be safe and turn on his fellow survivors. He will wear a casual business suit as this will create the realism of him being at work when the zombie Apocalypse broke out.
  • The Stranger (Maria) - Maria is a feisty female character who does not agree with the dominant role that Philip takes upon the group however, later in the film this resentment turns into deep feelings for the character. She is a tough female figure and saves Andrew from nearly being killed from a mutated human, breaking all gender stereotypes. Through the film, she will wear light jeans a vest top, with a hoodie/coat tied around her waist.

Prop, Costume and Location List

I have decided to do a prop, costume and location list at the same time as creating my first mock up story board because as I go through the process of creating my storyboard, I feel that I may come up with ideas which may include props/location and I can add these ideas to this list as my storyboard and script develops as well as adding ideas that I have already come up with. Throughout this process, I will add or remove props/costumes/locations as I decide what things will work and what things will not work.

Props
  • Halloween makeup (dark lip liner, blacks/reds/browns eye shadow, spirit gum, fake skin, fake nails, puff paint, fake blood, black eye shadow, etc.) Obviously, make up and how it is used is going to be an important feature of my film trailer as the characters included who are going to be playing zombies must look convincing for the audience to actual feel fear and feel compelled to see this film. I have researched (on the internet and YouTube) some zombie makeup tutorials which I will start practicing at an early stage so that when the times comes to when I am ready to start recording, I will be able to do it quickly and effectively. The videos I have based my makeup research around are the three videos listed below.

  • I want to use certain weapons within the different clips of the film trailer which would be appropriate for each character to be able to use. Stereotypically this would be a female character from a domestic location using a kitchen knife, lamp, etc but a male character using a cricket/baseball bat. I want to use some stereotypical conventions but also some un-stereotypical conventions in which will engage the audience like a female character holding a chainsaw and the man hiding behind the woman being protected. The picture below is from a fancy dress website I found which sells additional props to costumes that I found whilst searching for prop websites. I think that with the addition of costume props in my film trailer, it will create a more intense feeling of fear as well as creating realism due to the props looking realistic as opposed to fake an toy like.
  • Kitchen sink mise-en-scene will be an important feature to include in my film trailer because it creates a sense of realism that the audience can relate to. These things including; a TV, settee, lamps, photo frames, etc. for a location such as a living room.
Location
  • I want to use a derelict like location with is found on the marina near the old docks in Hull for one of my scenes. I want to use this location due to it fitting in with a horror genre and following certain codes and conventions. In this area, I feel that I could create a very powerful scene for my film trailer creating tension and fear to an audience.
  • A domestic location I feel is essential in this specific type of horror that I have chosen to revolve my trailer around. Therefore, I have decided to use my own house as well as a friend’s house (both in Hull) to create a realistic feel to the trailer and in the process, the audience being able to relate to the character within the scene due to a real domestic environment being used.
Costume

  • Zombies - After researching a number of zombie films, I have decided how I will create each zombie look for each character. Depending on what the character would be originally wearing before the zombie academic (e.g. depending on their jobs type, social class, etc.) will contribute to their overall look. Like in the second photo included below, different men of different social classes are portrayed by different clothing and apperances; one man in a suti and tie, another man wearing stereotypical trampy clothing and holding a sign which insinuates that he is homeless. Each character's clothes will be slightly torn, made to look dirtier and have blood stains all over themselves. The reason for this is because this way, the character's costume will fit the expectations of the audience due to the audience being exposed to zombie films and their stereotype look previously many times through other films, like in the photo below of the little girl who fits into the zombie stereotype.

Textual Analysis

I have decided to analyse 4 horror film trailers because of the fact I am creating my own horror film trailer. In this process, I am hoping to find inspiration for my film trailer as well as seeing the codes and conventions of horror films trailers. I have decided to split the analysing of my film into 2. I have decided to analyse:
  • 2 Zombie thriller films - one American and one British
  • 2 Zombie comedy films - one American and one British.
The reason I have chosen to do this is because I wanted to see the difference between the way that American films and made into trailers and how British films are made into trailers. Additionally, I will also be looking at the film posters for these films for real in depth detail and research.

'28 Days Later', is a British horror action film directed by Danny Boyle and released in 2002. This film is based around an infection that has been let out of a secure scientific laboratory turning normal humans into flesh eating zombies. The story follows the break down of society and the military. The film directly follows a group of people from London trying to get out of the city to somewhere safer, somewhere the military has promised safety, security, food and shelter. However, this is not what the group of people find when they get there as the military have become the dictator.
  • Language -
  • Institution - The studios which made this film are: UK Film Council and DNA Films. The UK Film Council was put together by the Labour government in 2000 to promote UK made films. One of it main resources of funding is the National Lottery Fund. In 2010, the Conservative party abolished the UK Film Council, many of it's functions have been passed onto the British Film Institute.
  • Ideology - Personally, I think the ideology of this film trailer is to make the film seem as realistic as possible to an audience, doing this by:
  • Using little special effects - This mainly being using detailed make up on the zombie characters instead of using CGI and editing to create their looks and therefore, a more realistic look is portrayed
  • Using local (to the director) locations - Because this is a British made film, a British audience is one of the main audiences which will watch this film however also, a range of other audiences will included in the audience. The fact that the film is based in London creates realism in three ways: it creates realism to a British audience due to London being the capital of England a country that the audience either lives in or knows well, it creates realism to audiences in other countries due to London being the most well known city in the UK and lastly, creates realism due to the location being in a realistic place where an audience member could put them self into personally as apposed to the film being set in a country like Spain or Turkey.
  • Using unknown stars - The characters in this film are not well known British or American stars and I think this is purposely done so that the audience cannot recognise anyone in the film. If a star like Johnny Depp were to be in this film it would take away the realism of this film because it would clearly not be real if a very familiar well known star would appear in the film. Unknown and unheard of stars included in the film makes it so the audience can relate to the character due to not recognising them from previous films as well as being able to create their own impression of the character without their previous role being included in their judgement.
  • Audience - The age audience of this film legally, would be an audience 18 years old and over. However, people of a much younger age would have to be considered into the age audience due to digitisation effecting the way an audience watch films. These include: illegal downloads of films, streaming of films on the Internet and films being shown on television which exposes people younger then the certificate age. With regards to the target audience of this film, it would be specifically targeted at an audience who enjoy the feeling of being scared, enjoy other horror/zombie/thriller films, and therefore could be classed as a niche audience. Additionally, the main target audience age for this film would be people between the age of 18-24, fitting in with the age range of people who are the most likely to spend money on the cinema, DVDs, etc. I think the target audience age for this film wouldn't really go above the age of late 30's as I think people of an older age would not appreciate this film as it is not a stereotypical film for people of an older age to watch. Additionally, because the film is a British film, it could be said that a British audience would be more apparent then any other country. The reason for this is because British people are usually very loyal to their country and if a British made film is brought into the cinemas, a lot of the public will go and see the film. It could be said that an American audience or any other country audience could be less apparent due to film not having as big a budget for advertisement like a Hollywood block buster would.
  • Representation -

'The Crazies' an American horror film directed by Breck Eisner and released in 2010. The film is a remake of the original film 'The Crazies' brought out in 1973 and directed by George A. Romero. This film although not actually a 'zombie film' follows the break down of society and government conspiracy within a village which water supply is infected thus infecting the villagers and turns them into bloody thirsty crazy humans and therefore, related to the film trailer I have previously analysed. The film directly follows a married couple trying to get away from the village without being detected by the government/military workers due to this ensuring their certain death.
  • Language -
  • Institution - The studios which made this film are: Imagenation Abu Dhabi and Participant Media. Participant Media is an American film and television production company began in 2004 and is seen as politically involved. Usually, PM creates films which are relevant to current events and documentaries and therefore, this film is a non-stereotypical genre of film for the studio to be involved with. Imagenation Abu Dhabi was founded in 2008 and and is a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Media which is fully owned by the government.
  • Ideology -
  • Audience - The audience of this film could include a slightly older audience due to this film being a remake of an original horror film
  • Representation -

Zombie land is an American comedy zombie film directed by Ruben Fleischer and released in 2009. The film follows a group of survivors in a zombie apocalypse, brought on by a mad cow disease which turns humans into flesh eating humans, who unwillingly end up on a long and extended road trip to try and find somewhere zombie free. Each character has teamed up in a pair and are constantly fighting each other for the control and dominance by using threats of guns and violence to get control of weapons and cars in the abandoned world. Each character has a 'code name' which is the name of the place that they come from and do not reveal their real names until some time into the film.
  • Language -
  • Institution - The studios which made this film are: Relativity Media and Pariah Studios. Relativity Media is an American production company which was founded in 2004. The company complies with convergence as the company is not just involved with the production and distribution of film and therefore, had a lot more online advertising then some of the other films I have analysed might have done like; an official film website, online advertising on social networking sites (Facebook, MySpace - sites that target specifically their target audience). Pariah Studios is unlike most studios and is very independent, being one man who specialises in 3D/artist design (green screens, animation, modeling, etc) and therefore, being a very different studio to be included in a large American film.
  • Ideology -
  • Audience - The audience of this film would be a large global audience due to the film being a Hollywood blockbuster film and therefore, targeting a large audience as most popular well known films brought into cinema and onto DVD are from an American film director/American film institution/production company. Additonally the fact that the comedy included in the film is a widley used slapstick style of comedy, it attracts a large audience because of the codes and conventions of this stylistic being used are extremley popular to an audience, espeically an American audience due to the stereotype of American enjoying the same style of comedy being used in the majority of well known enjoyed films.
  • Representation
Shaun of the Dead is a British zombie romantic comedy film directed by Edgar Wright and released in 2004. The film follows the main character Shaun an average man who is trying to get his life on track and at the same time trying to get his friends, family and ex-girlfriend to a safe haven of a local pub to stay protected against the people who are walking to local streets turned into flesh eating humans with no known reason. Shaun is instantly put in charge of the group and therefore makes all the decision making, he does this in an obvious attempt to get his ex-girlfriend to take him seriously and see that he has changed.
  • Language -
  • Institution - Due to this film being a British Film, the budget for this film will not have been anywhere near as large as an American Hollywood Blockbuster would have and therefore, a lot of studios are involved in creating this film: Working Title Films and the subsidiary Working Title 2 Productions (also known as WT2), Big Talk Productions and Film4 Productions. The amount of studios involved in the making of this film shows that the British made film needed a lot of financial help to get the film to be as big as a success as it became. All of the studios are British studios, being the main reason why they are included in the fully British made film - this linking with the geographical target audience. Additionally, the film being linked with the studio Film 4 Production, instantly linking the film with the well known British film channel Film 4.
  • Ideology -
  • Audience - The audience of this film would firstly be a British audience, mainly because the film is a completely British made film as well as the film being well advertised and shown on English TV channels like channel 4 and Film 4. Additionally, the film is targeted specifically at a British audience due to the 'Brithsh Humour' as some audience's from different countries do not understand the British Humour included as it is describes as witty, ironic, self negativity and very sarcastic and is sometimes confusing to different cultured audience. However saying this, this film did surprisingly well in America, a country who's audience is used to slapstick style comedy. This quite probably is because this specific country audience is used to seeing the same style of comedy over and over again in blockbuster Hollywood films and therefore, a difference in the stylistic comedy came as a refreshing change and subverted their comical expectations. Additonally, the use of up coming famous British stars targeted a larger audience as they're names are well known to a large global audience.
  • Representation -
